Orders to the USS Green Bay (LPD 20)
After learning in December that I was GREEN BAY-bound (the ship, not the city), I finally received my orders 3 days ago. I touched on this briefly in a post before, but I’m excited to have been selected for the Green Bay, as my father was on the first USS Green Bay from 1971-1973. Green Bay was his first ship; Green Bay will be my last ship. There’s a certain amount of symmetry in that and it makes me feel a little closer to my father (who passed away in 2006).
Anyway, that got me thinking that I should explain the orders negotiation process in general terms. In the Navy, we are all assigned to “billets”, which is essentially a fancy word for job or position. I am billeted here on USS HALSEY as the Information Assurance Manager (IAM), which also makes me the Combat Communications (CC) Division Leading Chief Petty Officer (LCPO). The other things I do are collateral duties: I’m the Electronic Key Management System (EKMS) Manager, the Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor (DAPA) and several other things. But, I’m billeted here as the IAM.
